Today there is a cultural craze for reality--reality television that is. It is at an all time high. The funny thing is the shows we watch are all anything but real. The shows are pre-planned and the people pretend. Unfortunately, the scene we see in the church world is not much different. Whether on television or in our church many of the things we observe horizontally are not real. From people’s hair, your church chair, people’s talk, or the pastor’s walk, it’s often all a great big stage. However, both of these environments reveal a simple truth. Man longs for the real thing! His preoccupation reveals a hunger for more and he keeps trying to find it. The truth is the answer is found vertically. There will be challenges and trials in this life to find true reality but if we embrace the climbs in our life—we can all find truth if we look up. The reality of Christ is waiting for you and me!

Have you ever thought “What’s one idea that could change the world for the better?” No? Well, God did. God came up with a way for the world in its sinful, separate, sickly state to be reunited with him and find true life and meaning. Here is what he did-- “For God so loved the world He gave…! (John 3:16a)” That’s it! He knew then what we must learn today that when we are giving we are really living.
Most people who don’t attend church believe that it is just for “church people.” But the sad fact is that isn’t the reason the church was created. What has gone wrong? We believe that many (supposed) Christ followers have made a simple message very exclusive and un-inviting. Yet, when we read the bible we see quite a different story. We see that all are invited into a relationship with God, and that the message which invites is to be brought through a messenger known as the church (Ephesians 3:10). What has gone wrong here? There are a growing number of un-churched people in America (90 million) who have given up on church. Why?

This Holiday series; “He Is” is taken from an Old Testament prophecy written by the prophet Isaiah over 700 years before the birth of Christ. This prophecy was looking forward and told of the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders, And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace.” He came as the prescription to all we are now facing. The names of Jesus are strategically dedicated by God himself to deliver help to us in tangible ways not only during the Holiday season but the entire year.
Many people treat life like a game. It’s not taken too seriously and it seems like we are just playing around instead of being intentional with the time we’ve been given. "Honey, what do you want for Christmas?" Isn't that the question you get around this time of year? I know I do. But is that the best question given the state of our world today? I don't think so. The good news is that God in his infinite wisdom as the perfect parent knows and gives us exactly what we need . . . and not necessarily what we want. He always has our best interest in mind.
