4th-Annual Event Shared Best Practices Of Justice-Involved Programs, Services

The fourth annual Reentry United conference was held Aug. 15, in Grand Rapids at the GVSU L.V. Eberhard Center. With a sold-out crowd of 300 people, the event was a testament to the growing momentum behind reentry efforts in Michigan and beyond.

The day opened with remarks from Warden Melinda Braman, the 2024 Warden of the Year, who set the tone with a message of hope and collaboration.

Following her remarks was keynote speaker Adam Clausen, whose story deeply resonated with the audience. At just 24 years old, he made a series of life-altering decisions, committing nine robberies in three weeks — actions that resulted in a staggering 213-year prison sentence.

Clausen’s story is one of resilience and redemption. Through unwavering determination to transform his life and future, he ultimately served 20 years, 5 months and 17 days before being released. His message reminded everyone of the power of change and the importance of second chances.

The day continued with four breakout time slots, offering a total of 12 unique sessions. Topics were focused on pre-reentry preparation and included sessions such as:

  • Assisting Veterans in Reentry
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment for Addiction
  • Online Learning in Correctional Facilities
  • Getting Ready for Reentry\
  • And more!

During the lunch session, the conference featured a powerful panel discussion focused on success stories. The panel brought together formerly incarcerated individuals and MDOC staff, highlighting how compassion, dignity and human connection can make a real difference in reentry outcomes. The discussion reinforced a central message: When people are treated as human beings — regardless of their past — success becomes not only possible but likely.

To close out the day, William Kitchen delivered a moving spoken-word performance, offering heartfelt reflections on his time spent incarcerated. His words served as a reminder of the collective impact this community makes. The event concluded with a shared sense of pride, as Michigan continues to lead the way — ranking among the top five states in the U.S. for lowest recidivism, with a rate of just 21 percent.

Organizers already are looking ahead to next year’s Reentry United conference to continue building momentum, strengthening partnerships and creating more opportunities for successful reentry. Each year brings us closer to our shared goal: Making every return home a success story.
