Michigan Works ! West Central Adds OTR Truck Driver Apprenticeship Program
USDOL Registered Apprenticeship Program Is A Time-based One-Year Training Program
A one‑year, time‑based USDOL Registered Apprenticeship training program ready to hit the road in West-Central Michigan. The newly-opened program is designed to combine hands‑on experience with structured classroom instruction, providing a clear pathway into high‑demand trucking careers.
Throughout the yearlong apprenticeship, participants will complete 2,000 hours of paid, on‑the‑job training. During this time, apprentices gain real‑world experience in critical areas, such as vehicle inspections, pre‑trip planning, logistics coordination, cargo handling, documentation preparation, safe driving practices, basic truck maintenance, weight distribution and professional customer relations. Employers also have the flexibility to incorporate company‑specific training, safety protocols and operational requirements, ensuring apprentices are fully prepared to succeed within their organization.
In addition to on‑the‑job training, apprentices will complete related technical instruction (RTI) through Pinnacle Truck Driver Training. This four‑week portion of the program includes approximately 160 hours of in-classroom and behind‑the‑wheel instruction and prepares participants to test for a State of Michigan Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL‑A). This combination of training ensures apprentices develop both the technical knowledge and practical skills needed for long‑term success.
Career seekers must first be hired by an employer before entering the apprenticeship, creating a careful balance between obtaining a CDL and securing employment. Currently, Quick Way in Ludington is signed on as an active employer for the new program, and additional employer partners are being sought out to join.
For employers, the apprenticeship model offers a powerful recruitment advantage. The designation of an USDOL registered apprenticeship program helps attract motivated candidates, builds employee loyalty, and opens the door to apprenticeship grants and ongoing Michigan Works! West Central support.
Together, this approach creates a win‑win: skilled workers gain a clear career pathway to success, and employers invest in a workforce built for the future.
