November 14, 2024

Corewell Health Ludington Hospital, WSCC Lauded For First-In-Nation Apprenticeship Program

Michigan Works! West Central is thrilled to recognize the first cohort in its pre-licensure RN apprenticeship program -- the first of its kind in the United States. This innovative program, which launched in January 2024, represents a new path for aspiring nurses to gain hands-on experience while pursuing their education.

Leading the way are two trailblazing apprentices, April Bratschi and Samantha Stilson. These remarkable individuals have shown unwavering determination and resilience, balancing the rigorous demands of school, work and personal life. Not only have they risen to the challenge, but they’ve also set a high standard for those who will follow in their footsteps.

Bratschi and Stilson are expected to receive their official completion certificates from the U.S. Department of Labor in spring 2025. This recognition isn’t just a testament to their hard work—it’s a national acknowledgment of their dedication and achievement.

Innovation at Corewell Health Ludington Hospital

A special shoutout goes to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital for its visionary leadership in nursing education. By embracing this apprenticeship model, Corewell Health has set a new benchmark for healthcare training. This program not only addresses the critical nursing shortage, but also creates a pathway for individuals passionate about nursing to achieve their goals.

“We are groundbreakers on this. There are no other pre-licensure RN apprenticeships in the state or country,” said Meleah Mariani, Chief Nursing Officer at the hospital, highlighting the program’s innovative nature.

Michigan Works! West Central is incredibly proud to partner with Corewell Health and our education partners at West Shore Community College on this initiative, and look forward to expanding this program to other Corewell hospitals in the future.

Gratitude and Congratulations

To Bratschi and Stilson, thank you for your commitment to excellence. You are the future of healthcare, and your dedication inspires us all. Congratulations on this incredible achievement! Your hard work is shaping the future of nursing, and we can’t wait to see all that you’ll accomplish. Keep up the amazing work!

“I’ve been grateful for this opportunity. As soon as I heard about the apprenticeship, I was thrilled," Bratschi said.
