Employees Receive On-The-Job Training And The Skills Necessary To Advance Their Careers

In collaboration with Michigan Works! West Central, Great Lakes Castings is making significant strides in strengthening its skilled workforce. As part of the Michigan Statewide Targeted Apprenticeship Inclusion & Readiness System (MiSTAIRS) initiative, the Ludington-based manufacturer was awarded a $36,000 check to support the expansion and sustainability of its USDOL Registered Apprenticeship Program. This funding directly addresses the company’s need for trained talent in trade-specific positions, ensuring they can continue to grow while building a pipeline of skilled professionals.

The MiSTAIRS initiative provides a comprehensive package of resources for apprentices, including on-the-job training, technical instruction and essential support services. Each apprentice benefits from a tech package that includes an iPad with a case — helping them stay connected with coursework and track progress in real-time. Financial assistance offered through this program removes barriers to training and enhances the apprentice experience, ensuring they are equipped for long-term success in their careers.

During 2025, nine U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprentices at Great Lakes Castings have received support through the MiSTAIRS program. Regionally, Michigan Works! West Central has partnered with six employers to provide similar resources to at least 43 apprentices. This strategic investment in workforce development underscores the importance of nurturing talent today to meet the demands of tomorrow’s manufacturing economy.
