Ludington's FloraCraft Named Employer Of The Month For August 2025

Floral Foam Manufacturer Has Operated In Mason County Since 1946

With more than 75 years of excellence in manufacturing and community impact, FloraCraft continues to shine as a national leader in craft and floral foam products — and as a model for what it means to be a people-first employer deeply rooted in Ludington.

Founded in 1946, FloraCraft has grown into the world’s leading producer of foam products for the craft and floral industries. Now, the  company provides a robust line of products, including floral and craft extruded polystyrene foam, floral wet and dry foam, containers, wire, molded-urethane foam, natural straw and Spanish moss, as well as easels, saddles and huggers.

In 2020, the company launched FōM, a game-changing foam product made from recycled post-consumer materials— the first of its kind in over 70 years and a major step toward a more sustainable future.

CEO Steve Carlson said sustainability has played a crucial role in FloraCraft’s progress over the last 15 years.

“In our 78 years of operations, we’ve experienced numerous milestones, and the last 15 have been particularly exciting with regard to our developments in sustainability. One of the first major steps we took was to recycle more than 98 percent of our foam fabrication scrap. We collect the material and use it in other products or sell it.”

FloraCraft has also expanded its automation capabilities by adding robotic case packers and other equipment that help move products through the manufacturing process and onto pallets. It also is working on an automated cutting machine to increase output for highly in-demand four-inch foam balls.

This innovative spirit is matched by the company’s strong culture of care and recognition.

“There was arguably no better moment that speaks to our culture than in 2018, when our owner Lee Schoenherr announced plans to share nearly $4 million with full-time members of our team through cash bonuses and 401(k) retirement accounts in recognition of the role they played in building a world-class company, ” said Carlson. “Our team stays motivated because they know they work for an organization that cares about their well-being, their family and is committed to doing business the right way.”

The company’s culture and innovation have earned global recognition. FloraCraft was recently nominated for the Beyond Plastics Award, which honors groundbreaking achievements in sustainability.

FloraCraft also has won awards for sustainability and innovation from the National Association of Manufacturers and American Business Awards.

FloraCraft’s mission is built around three pillars: excellence in products, diversity in thought and deed, and superior supply chain  management. Its motto, “We Make It: Fun,” reflects a company-wide dedication to creativity, innovation, and workplace positivity.

Its employee-first culture emphasizes its commitment to continuous learning. Its success not only benefits its team but also strengthens the broader Ludington area.

FloraCraft also is dedicated to workforce development. Through its partnership with Michigan Works! West Central, the company has established USDOL registered apprenticeships in advanced manufacturing, obtained Incumbent Worker Training grants, and utilized Going PRO Talent Fund resources. In early 2025, 50 employees participated in leadership training focused on lean manufacturing, cross-functional collaboration, and continuous improvement.
