Workers who received unemployment benefits in 2022 can now view or download their 1099-G tax statements through the Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM). A paper copy of the form will be sent to everyone through U.S. mail by the end of January.

The 1099-G or "Certain Government Payments" statements are prepared by the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) and report the amount in unemployment benefits a person received and the state and federal taxes that were withheld. Individuals need the 1099-G form to complete their state and federal tax returns. The agency has generated about 265,000 forms this year.

To access the 1099-G form electronically:

• Log into MiWAM.
• Click on the "I Want To" heading
• Click on the "1099-G" link.
• Click on the 1099-G letter for the 2022 tax year.

If an individual believes their 1099-G form is incorrect, they can request a revised form by downloading and submitting Form 1920, Request to Correct Form 1099-G.

Anyone who received a 1099-G form but did not apply for unemployment benefits last year could be the victim of identity theft. If it’s believed that is the case, fill out and submit Form 6349, Statement of Identity Theft in MiWAM.

Timely access to 1099s is one way the UIA is providing exemplary customer service under Director Julia Dale, whose goal is to transform the agency into a national model of fast, fair, and fraud-free service. Since Dale was appointed director in October 2021, UIA has:

• Launched the UIA Modernization Workgroup, with representatives from labor, the business community and jobless advocates, to advise the agency on significant improvements in how it can better serve Michigan workers and employers. 
• Announced a replacement for the agency’s decade-old computer system with a user-friendly, state-of-the-art interface for claimants and businesses. A new system will allow timely program adjustments as economic conditions change and quick analysis of data, which is currently not possible.
• Collaborated with the Attorney General’s office as well as local, state and federal law enforcement to bring bad actors to justice and combat fraud at the agency.
• Approved more than 76,000 waivers to people who were asked to pay back benefits, waiving more than $555 million in overpayments. UIA continues to evaluate populations for future waivers.
• Halted overpayment collections on claims filed since March 1, 2020, while the agency addresses pending protests and appeals.
• Revamped the Michigan.gov/UIA website to make it more responsive to those using a mobile phone or tablet to access services.
• Secured a $6.8 million equity grant from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) to make it easier for workers in underserved communities to access jobless benefits.
• Implemented new ethics and security clearance policies for employees and contractors.
• Rebuilt to nearly $1.8 billion (and growing) the UI Trust Fund from which weekly benefits are paid to workers who lose their job through no fault of their own.
• Reassigned staff and resources to address the largest categories of claims that are contributing to the agency’s overall case backlog.

Worked to simplify its correspondence using a human-centered approach to make letters easier to understand for claimants and employers.
